10 Things to Enjoy this Summer

1. Cherry Coke

Although it's no new addition to the classic Coke soda-family, it is certainly the favourite cousin. It was seemingly scarce in Canada for a while, but has made it back into stores recently in a new, tasty way. Make sure to check it out this summer!!

2. Relax, self-love time

Exam week is over, time to relax. Take advantage of the break from school by relaxing and taking time off from the stress of life. Everyone needs it! Make a jar of summer sun-tea and kick back at a low-expense, home spa or fix yourself a bubble beard in the bath. It doesn't matter how you spend your time off, just as long as you enjoy...

3 steps to make sun-tea:

  1. Use 6-8 tea bags per one gallon of filtered water (you can experiment with interesting new flavours!)

  2. Add ingredients to a jar.

  3. Set the jar out in the sun for 3 to 5 hours, depending on how strong you like your tea

  4. Add sugar and frozen lemonade or other additives and enjoy <3

3. Volunteering

If you're not one for sitting back, then volunteering is a great way to spend loose time. There are always lots of great, local organizations looking for help in every community. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience, one that also looks good on resumes and portfolios. If you're looking at an open weekend on your calendar, then consider it this summer.

4. Real Fruit Freezies

There's nothing more refreshing than a healthy alternative of the best summer delight. So hurry to your local superstore and pick up a box of these tasty treats, with all the health-craze jumbo going on it's not hard to find.

5. Drive-Ins

Although rare now-a-days, a drive-in experience is like no other. The popcorn tastes better, the movie is more exciting, and life seems sweeter - or at least it seems like it is when you're at the drive-in. There's a perfect retro feeling for a first date, family trip, or Saturday adventure, even when you make one at home! Don't miss out this summer because the opportunity is thinning fast.

6. Reading

This may sound simple, but summer is one of the best times to read (especially outside!) As a novelist, I love being the reader for a while on a lazy afternoon. Do you want a fresh coming-out story? Fan Art by Sarah Tregay. Do you want a suspenseful, teen mystery? Chain Letter by Christopher Pike. Want something tragically overdone? Reading Twilight for the eighth time always makes for a good afternoon. Or at least that's what my bookshelf looks like...

7. Childhood Sweets

Is it just me or does candy seem even more irresistible in July? Maybe Caesar predicted it, but it just seems apparent that childhood favourite sweets are a must. If it's a guilt binge on extra-big live wires or a quick snatch of Hubba Bubba at the movies (and maybe a Sprite because Tom Holland is thirsty in the new Spiderman: Homecoming) it's worth the crash after the sugar buzz. So head to your local candy emporium this summer!

8. No snow - usually

It wouldn't be the first time to get snow in summer on this side of the Arctic Circle, but this year it has been good weather since April! Unless you are a polar bear, I speak for many Canadians who are thankful that the rumours aren't true. No, we do not live in igloos. So enjoy the freedom from the wool and enjoy the grace of the summer sunshine.

9. Summer Rain

Did I happen to mention there's something better than the summer blaze? It's the smell of the thunderstorm that comes afterwards. Have you ever danced in the rain, singing and laughing? Do it this summer. I don't know if it's the extra nitrogen in the air or Nicholas Sparks telling me it's the best, but it sure feels like it. Rain, hot shower, and a good book. One that smells like a book, not on an iPad. That's how it's done.

10. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

'nough said.
